Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Not at all! Our classes are designed for people with zero martial arts background. You’ll learn the basics step by step in a safe and welcoming environment.
What should I wear to my first class?
If you don't have a gi, come in comfortable workout clothes, like a t-shirt and athletic pants or shorts. Professor Lopez can guide you on purchasing the correct gi for you.
Do you offer classes for kids?
Yes! We will have structured gi classes for kids ages 5 and up. Our kids’ program will focus on confidence, respect, discipline, and fun while teaching practical Jiu-Jitsu skills. Stay tuned for class times and dates!
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for children?
Absolutely. Safety is our top priority. Classes are closely supervised, techniques are taught with care, and kids learn to train respectfully with their partners.
How often should I train?
Most beginners start with 2–3 classes per week, but you can train more or less depending on your goals and schedule. Consistency is more important than frequency at the beginning.
Do I need to be in shape before starting BJJ?
No, you’ll get in shape by training! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu improves fitness, flexibility, and endurance over time, no matter where you’re starting from.
What is “Leave Your Ego at the Door”?
This Machado family philosophy guides everything we do. It means training with humility, respect, and an open mind. At TLBJJ, everyone is here to learn and grow... no egos, no intimidation.
Do you offer trial classes?
Yes! We encourage all new students to try a free trial class to see if BJJ is right for them.
How do I sign up?
